Whitewater Rafting
 Get
ready for some rip roaring good times! With so
many fast flowing rivers in the area like the
Watauga and the North Fork of the New River,
there are many excellent places to enjoy NC
whitewater rafting, canoeing and even kayaking

The Watauga River is dam controlled which means from the Spring season to the Fall time period, the water is high and the rapids are roaring, creating perfect spots for large rafts and smaller kayaks. The part of the river that is commonly rafted contains mostly Class I-III rapids and is just right for large groups and families, however the Watauga Gorge area is open to kayakers and contains class IV and class V rapids and even takes you over a waterfall!

There are many great local guide companies in the region that offer guided day and camping white water trips on many of the local rivers and tributaries. Edge of the World
has long been a community favorite in Banner Elk and offers guided trips down many of the area’s rivers as well as a few rivers a bit further away in Tennessee. Be sure to wear proper attire and adhere to all safety instructions when enjoying the NC whitewater rafting in the High Country.
